The Sugar Land Skeeters and manager Gary Gaetti announced right-handed pitcher Derek Blacksher, from Bridge City, was signed to a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. He will join the Advanced-A affiliate of the club in Dunedin, Florida. He becomes the eighth Sugar Land player this season to earn a contract to Minor League Baseball. Blacksher went 5-3 this season with the Skeeters after making 25 appearances and nine starts with the club. LCM Preseason Preview The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears have made the playoffs the last two seasons under Coach Randy Crouch. As the Bears head into the 2015 season, Coach Crouch wants to emphasize the running game more. Crouch says the Bears will try to run the ball a bit better and see as it goes. Commissioners Approve Tax Rate
The Commissioners Court approved Monday the proposed tax rate for the next tax year as 54.4 cents per 100 dollars value. This represents no change for county tax payers. The Court can lower the tax rate from the proposed tax rate of 54.4 cents, but it cannot raise it above that amount when it approves the effective tax rate in September. Commissioner Jody Crump is confident that not raising taxes this year will fit the county’s proposed budget. Dwayne DuBois takes over as the head coach of the Cardinals for his first season, but DuBois is a 1986 graduate of Bridge City High School. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs made it to the state championship game last season. Falling just short in that game is something Coach Cornel Thompson thinks the Mustangs can build on in 2015.
