Edward Bolen Rutland, Jr., 71, of Warren, Texas passed away on Friday, August 21, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Edward was born on September 15, 1943 in Charleston, South Carolina to parents, Margaret Sue (Smith) and Edward Bolen Rutland Sr. He had lived in the Warren area since 1979, prior in Port Neches. Edward served his country in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He worked construction and owned and operated Patio Plus for many years. Crash Stalls Traffic on Interstate 10
Afternoon Crash Stalls Traffic on Interstate 10 Traffic was stalled about 2 p.m. Thursday after a crash on Interstate 10 westbound near Highway 62. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that a Dodge pickup truck was traveling westbound on the interstate in the inside lane. The driver moved to the outside lane but did not see that traffic was stopped ahead. The driver veered back into the inside lane and hit a Toyota passenger car. Auto-Bike Accident
A bicyclist was taken by ambulance to Southeast Texas Medical Center in Port Arthur after he was hit by a car about 6:30 Tuesday morning on Strickland Drive. Orange Police Officer Robert Ashworth reported that 28-year-old Brandon Alleman of Orange sustained non-incapacitating injuries. Alleman was riding a bike on 37th Street and was hit by a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck that was traveling west on Simmons Drive. Officer Ashworth reported that witnesses said the bicyclist ran a red light when he crossed into the intersection and was hit. Hurricane Awareness
The month of August represents roughly the half way point of hurricane season with still three months to go. Mark Hanna with the Insurance Council of Texas provides an update of the 2015 hurricane season. Hanna pointed out it has been a relatively quiet hurricane season with now Tropical Storm Danny in the Atlantic only the fourth named storm, none of which has reached hurricane status to this point. Upscale RV Park On Back Burner
Businessman Mark Frey said he is postponing his plans for an upscale RV park and has withdrawn his request for an economic development incentive. "The costs went up with construction and property and we decided to table it for a year," Frey said. The City of Orange Economic Development Corporation and the Orange City Council in May approved an economic development incentive of $250,000 for Frey. The agreement was for him to eventually pay back $50,000 of the money. The economic development money comes from a special sales tax that voters approved. Piney Woods Winery Owner Dies
The muscadine vines at Piney Woods Winery are heavy with fruit waiting to be picked. But this year the harvest has been canceled. Winery founder Alfred Flies passed away Friday at the age of 92. Flies (pronounced flees) established the winery 30 years ago after operating an interior design business in Orange for almost 25 years. His daughter, Lori Flies, said the winery’s roots started with a couple of plum trees in their yard. Her father decided to make wine from the fruit.
