County Notification System

Pictured: Commissioners recognized August 24 as "Julie Rogers Gift of Life Program" Day in Orange County. The Commissioners Court approved an agreement Monday with Blackboard Connect to provide a county notification service. Emergency Management Coordinator Ryan Peabody recommended using Blackboard Connect for the county in case of emergencies such as a hurricane or a chemical plant accident. Peabody said the county previously used a company that charged a per use fee when it was used by the Sheriff’s Office dispatchers. Entergy Reports Outage Monday

Entergy had another power outage Sunday night in the east downtown area north along Simmons Drive. The company reports that 593 customers lost power at 11:46 p.m. and were without electricity for almost two hours. Nel Bennett

Nel Ernestine Bennett, 92, of Bridge City, Texas, passed away on August 22, 2015, at Harbor Hospice House in Beaumont. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 11:00am. Nel was born to Eugene and Ernestine Laborde in Ponchatoula, LA on August 20, 1923. She was their third and youngest child. No school year in my memory had better school supplies than the year I started third grade at Jones Elementary School. (‘To George D. Houseman Scholarship Created At LSCO

Gisela Houseman, distinguished business woman and philanthropist, donated $50,000 to Lamar State College-Orange for the Tony Houseman Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Mike Shahan, Lamar State College - Orange president stated, “This is a big occasion for Lamar State College - Orange. Gisela and Tony have supported LSC-O for a long, long time. The Houseman scholarship fund has been instrumental for so many students pursuing an education, students who otherwise could not have done so.” Houseman is a native of Hamburg, Germany and became a United States citizen in 1950. Phelan Addresses LSCO Grads

Dade Phelan, State Representative for Texas House District 21, gave the commencement address at the Lamar State College - Orange 2015 Summer Commencement on August 14 at the Lutcher Theater in Orange. Three graduates of Lamar State College-Orange graduated with the designation of summa cum laude, with “highest honors.” Summa cum laude designation includes those students with grade point averages of 3.8 to 4.0.
