The Orange City Council Tuesday approved on first reading a new budget that will start October 1. The tax rate will be 70 cents per $100 valuation. No one spoke during the public hearing on the budget. The current tax rate is 68 cents per $100 but the 70 cents per $100 is considered the effective tax rate because the city has lost property values and will raise the same amount of income. The Bridge City Cardinals enter the 2015 football season with a new head coach, a new offense, and a new defensive scheme. New Coach Dwayne DuBois believes his Cardinals have picked up the new offense and defense in the scrimmages pretty good. DuBose indicates Bridge City is ahead of schedule with implementing the new offense and the new defense. Shot Man Identified, Shooter Still Loose
The 54-year-old man who was shot in the leg on 14th Street Tuesday evening has been identified as Lawrence Brooks of Orange. According to Officer L.L. Claybar, Brooks was walking northbound about 7 p.m. in the 1300 block of 14th Street when a man he knew in a small blue car drove up. The two men got into an argument. The man in the car shot Brooks and drove away. Officer Claybar reported the bullet was a .22 hollow point and went into the middle of Brooks’ right leg. Friday’s season opener for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears is against the cross town rivals the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. Bears’ Coach Randy Crouch says the Mustangs will be a big test for the LC-M defense. Crouch compliments the WO-S coaches and adds they are a quality team. The coach hopes the Bears can contain Mustangs’ quarterback Jack Dallas who has plenty of speed and talent at wide receiver to throw the ball to and will have some backs that can run the ball as well. The scrimmages are over and now the games count. The Deweyville Pirates open up against the East Chambers Buccaneers. Coach Lance Dale knows the Pirates will have their work cut out for them when they face the Buccaneers. Congressman Dr. Brian Babin held a Veterans’ Town Hall Meeting Tuesday night in Orange. Close to 100 veterans attended the meeting at the American Legion Lloyd Grubbs Post 49 Hall. Congressman Babin said the town hall meetings are to discuss the issues facing veterans. Accident Injures Three
Three people were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after an accident near the intersection of Texas Ave. and Osborne in Bridge City. The white Ford Mustang was traveling north on Texas Ave. The driver said another vehicle tried moving in his lane, causing him to veer over into the southbound lane, striking a Dodge truck and another black vehicle.
