Verla Mae Droddy, 85, of Hartburg, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Oakwood Manor Care Facility in Vidor. Born on May 14, 1930 in Clarksville, Arkansas, she lived in Arkansas briefly as a child and was a lifelong resident of Hartburg. Verla was of the Assembly of God faith, she enjoyed collecting recipes, listening to Bluegrass and Country Music, she enjoyed cooking and baking, traveling with her husband, watching television and spending time with her family. Boyd Lee, 73, of Orange, Texas passed away on September 10, 2015, in Beaumont. Born in Normangee, Texas, on January 4, 1942, he was the son of Robert O’Dell Lee and Edith Farrar Lee. R. Boyd was employed as an electrical engineer by DuPont in Victoria, Texas upon his graduation. He then transferred within the company to Wilmington, Delaware, Chicago, Illinois, and finally to Orange in 1970. Orange Man Sentenced
A man from Orange was sentenced in Beaumont Friday to 40 years in state prison for beating and robbing senior citizens. 43-year-old Preston Joseph Robertson, who sometimes went by the last name Robinson, was sentenced in state district court Friday after pleading guilty to aggravated robberies in Nederland and Beaumont last year. Robertson is under indictment in Orange County for aggravated robbery in connection with beating and robbing an 83-year-old man in Little Cypress. A court date has not been set. Friday was Patriots Day in more ways than one. The Goose Creek Memorial Patriots held on to a 30-23 win over the Little Cypress Mauriceville Bears. The Bears fought back from a two touchdown deficit late in the game to tie the game at 23 all. But a second attempt at recovering an onside kick failed and GCM drove the ball down the field and scored with 2:43 left. The Deweyville Lady Pirates defeated the Kountze Lady Lions in 3 games Friday night in Deweyville 25-13 ,25-11, 25-23. The Lady Pirates were on fire for the night hitting a combined .307 for the night with 39 kills and only 11 hitting errors. The Lady Pirates also made all but one serving hitting for a 98.6% serve rate while accumulating 14 aces. Shaylin Dupuy had 30 assists and 6 digs.
