James Hammett, 86, departed this world on September 26, 2015. He passed peacefully in the presence of his family. James was a minister, a carpenter and an avid fisherman. He loved to go to garage sales and collect "treasures". One of the favorite pastimes of the Grandchildren was to go looking at all the goodies he had stored away in his shed. He loved living at Toledo Bend Lake. He checked his boat and trotlines faithfully and visited with his neighbors daily. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him. The naked ladies are all over town to make their annual September appearance. They also go by the names of red spider lily, hurricane lily or surprise lily. The “naked lady” nickname comes because the blooms sprout up on long stems without leaves. “The blooms appear, seemingly magically, overnight,” says the Aggie Horticulture website by Texas A&M University. The Orangefield Bobcats held Newton scoreless in the second half to beat the Eagles 24-21 at Singletary Stadium. It's the second straight year that OF has taken down the mighty state-ranked Eagles. OF scored first and Newton responded with a TD and the Bobcats lead 7-6. Newton would take the lead and complete a 2 point conversion to lead 14-7 after one quarter.
