Trading Land For Business
The Orange City Council approved a deal to trade land along 15th Street at Interstate 10 with a Houston real estate developer. City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the developer, Jeff Mallet and Jadco, will make an announcement at a later date concerning businesses that will locate at the site. The council last week and on Tuesday morning approved abandoning three-fourths of an acre of land that included some handed to the city in the 1950s from the Texas & New Orleans Railroad. Trees Protected In Historic District
People living in the Old Orange Historic District love their old live oak trees and will protect them. One resident Monday morning called police after an 18-wheel tractor-rig illegally turned on Pine Avenue and knocked a large limb off a tree. The city has signs on Green Avenue warning big rigs that trucks are not allowed on the streets. Officer L.L. Claybar said the woman was outside and saw the rig knock off the limb in the 500 block of Pine Avenue. The driver didn't stop. Bus drivers for the West Orange-Cove school district asked the school board Monday to help raise pay to get more drivers and monitors. They spoke during the citizen comments part of the regular monthly meeting. Driver Joyce Perry said the board needs to take care of the bus drivers because the drivers take care of the children. She said the buses have been running with up to 74 elementary students on board. Then they have up to 69 middle and high school students.
