Special Rodeo Held Saturday
It took only a year for the Special Angels Rodeo to spread across the area. On Saturday, hundreds of people attended the second annual event to let special needs adults and children experience rodeo-style events. Groups and individuals with their families attended the rodeo at the T2 Arena on Old Peveto Road. Dozens of volunteers helped and other members of the community came out to enjoy the fun. Activities included roping, mock-bull riding, and stick horse racing. Food was free for the special needs friends. Filing Begins For March Primary
Filing began Saturday, Nov. 14 to run in the Republican and Democratic primary races on March 1. Each party conducts its own election. Candidates for Orange County will file with Republican Chair Sheila Faske or Democratic Chair Deborah Mitchell. Candidates for state and federal offices file through the state party headquarters in Austin. The Orange County Republican Party held a fundraiser in Vidor Saturday. Buxton Still Entertaining
For 78 years the living legend Huey Buxton has been playing music and entertaining people. Buxton was a guest Wednesday during the Britt Godwin show on KOGT, and talked about how his music career started. Buxton remembered how his sister got a mandolin one Christmas because his dad could not afford a piano. She taught Huey a three-chord song “Little Brown Jug” and that’s how his playing music started. Buxton may have started playing music on the mandolin, but he is famous for being a fiddler which he attributes to his dad who also played the fiddle. Video Features Orange History
The Texas Historical Commission is guiding visitors to the Orange Riverfront Pavilion and Boardwalk for a look at World War II history. The commission made video featuring interviews with local residents about the time period. Jerry Pennington, president of the Orange County Historical Commission, said the state organization called him during the summer asking for assistance. The video features Louis Fairchild, PhD., an Orange native who wrote a book of oral interviews about Orange during the war years. Gala For Depot
The rousing piano sounds of the Boogie Woogie Train Blues filled the Orange County Expo Center Thursday night. But the non-profit group Friends of the Orange Depot wasn't feeling the blues. More than 300 people attended the second annual gala to raise money to restore the century old Southern Pacific Depot in downtown Orange. Ezra Charles of Houston, an expert in the boogie woogie style, entertained on the baby grand and gave short history lessons in boogie woogie, which evolved in East Texas.
