Residents picketed the Orion Engineered Carbons plant at the end of Echo Road Tuesday. At least two men carried picket signs in protest to the emissions from the plant. Orion Plant Manager Steve Burgin said he went out to speak to the protesters and counted eight people, but only two with signs. Burgin read from a statement prepared by Orion. Local Flooding Near Sabine
Some people living around the Sabine River in Deweyville and North Orange County may need to leave Santa a forwarding address. The river is expected to reach the moderate lowland flood stage on Friday and go to 26.1 feet by Sunday morning. The National Weather Service reports houses in the Indian Lake and River Oaks areas begin to flood at 26 feet. More rises could be possible based on water releases from Toledo Bend Reservoir. Accident Early Tuesday
No injuries were reported Tuesday morning in a collision between a maroon Mercury Sable and a silver Nissan Altima on Edgar Brown Drive. The fog was still thick when the accident occurred about 10 a.m. Officer Justin Kirkpatrick with the Orange Police Department said the Sable was traveling westbound on Edgar Brown and was going to turn left at the traffic light at Bluebonnet Street. Local Sales Tax Figures
As the year is ending, sales tax returns across most of Orange County are up with cities and the county getting increased income. However, Pinehurst is still down for sales taxes. The Texas Comptroller's Office reports the county received a check for $385,157 this month to cover the taxes collected for sales in October. The county for the first 10 months of the year has received $5.14 million. The Orange County Emergency Services District No. 3 for Little Cypress will continue to get sales taxes from International Paper until the end of 2015. Holiday Closings
The Orange County Courthouse along with city halls across the county will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. All cities will not have garbage pickup on Friday. The regularly scheduled Friday routes will be picked up on Saturday. Vidor is the only city with Saturday pickup and both Friday and Saturday garbage routes will be on Saturday. GetDaNet Fishing Club held its December club tournament on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Lake Sam Rayburn with weigh-in at Caney Creek Park. Participants braved a bitterly cold early morning that yielded to beautiful sunshine later in the day. While it was a day for Rat-L-Traps and Carolina Rigs, anglers also reported finesse worm bites on shaky, wacky and Texas rigs. Bullet Hits Windshield
Orange police are investigating a gunshot that hit the windshield of a vehicle with three young adults inside. Detective Captain Cliff Hargrave said one of the men inside was slightly cut by glass that was broken by the shot. According to Officer Brian Latiolais, the shooting was about 5 a.m. Sunday at Eddleman Road near the cutoff to Interstate 10. Presents Stolen
Thieves stole Christmas presents for children and other items from two houses in Orange in the past days. Police were called to Bowling Lane on Friday night and to Sixth Street in the Brownwood area on Saturday night. In both cases, the residents weren't home and the burglars broke windows. Officer Logan Holland said the Friday break-in was reported about 9:50 p.m. in the 3400 block of Bowling Lane. Clothes and about 20 wrapped presents were stolen.
