Someone Tuesday evening walked into a woman's living room and stole her purse as she was cooking supper. The burglary on Edgemont Drive was one of several investigated during the past two days by the Orange Police Department. Officer Dylan Mulhollan reported the burglary was in the 3700 block of Edgemont Drive about 7 p.m. Tuesday. The woman said she was in the kitchen and heard the front door open. Bruce Wayne Bertles, 78, of Bridge City, Texas, passed away on January 11, 2016, in Groves, Texas. Procedures Amended at CC
The Commissioners debated again Tuesday the adoption of parliamentary procedures for the meetings of the Commissioners Court. Commissioner David Dubose requested the item for discussion because he had concern that under the rules approved last week a commissioner might be restricted from commenting. County Judge Brint Carlton read an amended section of the procedures before a vote was taken of the Court members. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs got off to a slow start but they finished strong and fast in beating Hamshire-Fannett 82-37 at Mustang Gym. Fifty-two of their points came in the second and third quarters as their relentless defense lead to many fast break buckets. Thomas Wallace had his inside and outside game going with a game high 30 points. That included five 3-pointers and 3-4 at the stripe. KJ Miller also had a good game with 15 points (5-6 FT). Council Approves Bank Buy
Orange City Council Tuesday unanimously agreed to buy the First Financial Bank building, 812 16th Street. The bank building will be turned into city hall. Last week, Stephen Lee of First Financial said the bank will buy a vacant lot, currently owned by the Stark Foundation, to build a new building. Several residents asked for the council to keep city hall in the downtown area. One resident asked to form a citizens advisory committee and ask for input. Smith Pleads Guilty
A man under indictment for murder in connection with killing a woman from Orange in 2012, pleaded guilty Tuesday to reckless manslaughter in Beaumont. 39-year-old David Carl Smith received a punishment of 10 years in prison for the death of 26-year-old Amber Nicole Guillory Glisson in a Vidor hotel. Smith was in Judge John Stevens state district court in Jefferson County when the plea was made. Testimony was set to begin Tuesday for his murder trial. Orange County Judge Brint Carlton spoke during the citizens comments part of the Orange City Council meeting Tuesday to update the council on the status of the Orange County Economic Development Corporation. The council voted last year to stop supporting the county Economic Development Corporation by $25,000 a year. Orange is the only city in the county with its own, economic development corporation.
