Merrilee Rochau, 71, of Orange, Texas, passed away on January 28, 2016, at her home. Born in Mission City, British Columbia, Canada, on September 7, 1944, she was the daughter of J.W. Harr and Hattie (Faulkner) Muhs. Merrilee was a member of First United Methodist Church. She loved her family, her job, and her community. She enjoyed taking care of everyone and loved cooking for her friends and family. Merrilee had a great sense of humor. Connie was born on October 19, 1939 in Port Arthur, Texas to parents Beatrice (Theriot) and Voorhies Fontenot. She attended St. James and Bishop Byrne Catholic School where graduated in 1958. City Halts Purchase Temporarily
The city of Orange has agreed to temporarily stop the purchase of the First Financial Bank building on 16th Street and the plan to move city hall from downtown. Lawyer Leslie Barras, who lives in the Old Orange Historic District near downtown, filed for a temporary injunction earlier this week to halt the city's plans. Late Friday afternoon, she announced the city had agreed to stop for a time. A hearing before 260th State District Judge Buddie Hahn that was set for Tuesday has been moved to March 2, she said. The Orange City Council District 4 race could be a repeat of the close 2013 election that unseated an incumbent. Friday, former councilor Annette Pernell filed for the position now held by Mary McKenna. Three years ago, McKenna beat Pernell by four votes, 148 to 144. Two schools in West Orange, including Carl Godwin Auditorium, along with a commercial lot on 15th Street in Orange will be up for auction in February. The West Orange-Cove CISD is preparing to sell its vacant buildings and land. The buildings are the original West Orange High School, which was later a middle school.
