At approximately 12:15am, the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a crash between a bicyclist and a motor vehicle on the eastbound service road of Interstate 10 at Adams Bayou in Orange. The crash involved a police officer with the Orange Police Department. Beebe Talks Zika Virus
Concern of the spread of the Zika virus from South America to Southeast Texas is being addressed by Orange County Mosquito Control Director Patrick Beebe. As recently as this week Beebe has been in contact with the state health department concerning the Zika virus. Beebe said health officials are working to develop a test to detect the Zika virus. He indicated at this time there is not a test available. OPD Weekend Reports
A motorcyclist was injured Saturday afternoon when he ran off Eddleman Road at a curve. Orange police report 40-year-old Craig Broughton was taken by Acadian Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Police report he was driving east on Eddleman Road near Memorial Drive about 5 p.m. when he ran off into a ditch and the motorcycle overturned. A woman told Orange police Friday night that she was hit in the face with a brick while at the Kwik Stop store at 1555 16th Street. Police went to the store at 10:15 p.m. Friday after the attack. Cards Play Well At Tourney
BC Varsity softball team started their season off great this past week defeating Livingston on Tuesday and placing second in the Southeast Texas Kickoff Tournament in Beaumont. The Lady Cardinals defeated Vidor twice, West Brook, West Orange Stark, and Hardin Jefferson in order to place them in the championship game against La Porte. La Porte was held to just one run while Kassidy Wilbur worked hard on the mound recording seven strike outs until the sixth inning. West Orange-Stark High School students Tyffani Hinson and Olivia Basinger earned first place in Declamation and Interpretive Reading, respectively, at the school-level finals of the 112th Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation, a scholarship program sponsored by the Nelda C. and H.J. Orangefield High School UIL Academic Teams traveled to Center, Texas for an Invitational meet on Saturday, February 20th. OHS brought 28 students and came home with 18 medals. Allie Crouch brought home a medal in each Journalism Event: 4th Place in Editorials, 4th Place in Features, 1st Place in News, and 1st place in Headline Writing. Inspections Show 9 Perfect Scores
Schools and child care businesses did well in health inspections during the first two weeks of February. Orange County Health Inspector went to 21 schools or businesses dealing with food and gave nine perfect scores. The lowest score was a 78 to the Donut Palace on Highway 12 in Mauriceville. The store had demerits for sausage and boudain found at unsafe temperatures plus meat stored above raw donuts inside coolers.
