Making the playoffs has been a given for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears in previous seasons. This year could be a rebuilding season for the Lady Bears, who have only one senior on their varsity roster. Coach Dena Adkins has some players returning from last year’s squad that was eliminated in the playoff’s first round. Adkins is counting on junior Jenna James to return in the circle and do good things for the Lady Bears. How tough is the district competition for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears? Last season the Bears finished in a three-way tie for third place with West Orange-Stark and Hardin-Jefferson. Hardin-Jefferson won a play-in game with LC-M, and of course West Orange-Stark went all the way to the state championship game in Austin. Shangri La Recognizes Volunteers
Most of the friendly human faces seen at Shangri La Gardens are volunteers. Thursday afternoon the Stark Foundation honored them with the unveiling of a special wall sign paying tribute to those who serve. Katie Krantz, volunteer coordinator, said more than 128,000 hours have been provided by volunteers. "One of the main compliments we get (from visitors) is it feels like family," she said. Hornets Make Donation
St. Mary Catholic School classes participated in celebrating the 100th day of school. Each class chose an organization to donate items to. The goal for each class was to collect 100 of the chosen items. First grade chose to donate baby item to the Rainbow Room. Elections Cancelled in WO and PH
Filing for the May municipal elections in Pinehurst and West Orange has ended. Both cities had three positions on the May 7 ballot. Pinehurst City Administrator Robbie Hood said with incumbent Alderman Mike Anderson withdrawing recently from the election there is no need for the election in Pinehurst. Hood indicated the city council will take action at its next meeting March 8 to cancel that election. Anderson withdrew because he plans to spend more time travelling with his band of musicians and did not want to miss several city council meetings.
