Orangefield’s Dennis Vansa moves up from his assistant coach position last year to be the Bobcats’ head coach this season. Vansa has several players returning for Orangefield that have seen a lot of playing time for the Bobcats. Junior Dylan Anthony has already played two years on the varsity for Orangefield. Mack Patterson likewise had been on the varsity the last two seasons. Vansa says Josh Chandler is a senior who will see time in the outfield and do some pitching duties for the Bobcats. The Lady Bobcats in Orangefield have been contenders for the district championship the last few years, winning it two years ago. Coach Amy McLaughlin believes this year’s club has a corps of returning players that will make Orangefield a playoff team again this season. Doucet Wins Art Contest
Jaci Doucet, a student at St. Mary Catholic School, participated in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Quick Draw Still Life contest held at the Reliant Hall on Saturday, February 20. There were 600 entries and 70 students from the junior high and high school level selected to participate. Within the junior category only 26 students were allowed to participate. Doucet won the JH division and was awarded a week to the Glacell School of Art in Houston this summer which is valued at $1,500 among other prizes. The Orange Fire Department responded to a house fire at 402 Knox Wednesday morning around 8:30am. The 85 year old homeowner and her son were having coffee when they smelled smoke coming from the bedroom. Battalion Chief John Bilbo of OFD said early indication is that it was an electrical fire. Orange Approves New Sign Ordinances
The Orange City Council Tuesday approved new ordinances regulating signs and creating new categories of signs. The new categories are "exhibitions signs" and "special event signs." According to the new rules, an "exhibition sign" is for a "cultural or performing exhibition, event or performance of a historic, cultural or artistic nature such as plays, concerts and museum exhibits." Will Succumbs To ALS
Retired city of Orange parks director Joe Will died Tuesday, succumbing to ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig disease. He was 60. Will retired three years ago before the severe symptoms of the disease began. He had worked for the city for 38 years after starting when he was 19 years old. He worked his way up the ladder of city positions to oversee seven different city services. For most of his career, he worked as the parks director. Texas Ranger Bobby Smith and Sheriff Keith Merritt wait outside the Orange County courtroom where a former corrections officer is on trial for aggravated assault of an arrested man in handcuffs.
