On Tuesday night in San Marcos, Texas Baseball used a six-run 11th inning to boost itself to a 10-4 win over Texas State. The extra-inning victory is the Longhorns' first in three tries this season and is Texas' 23rd consecutive win over the Bobcats. After seeing the Texas lead slip in the eighth, freshman Chase Shugart (1-0) came on to pitch for the Longhorns and worked himself in an out of a bases-loaded jam. Former Orange County Economic Development Coordinator Bobby Fillyaw is one step closer to becoming Newton County Judge. Tuesday Fillyaw got the most votes (708) but will face Paul Price (435) in a runoff. The winner will face Democrat Leonard Powell in November. Fillyaw moved back to Newton Co. after 10 years in Orange County. Newton Co. Way Services Contract Tabled
The financing agreement between Way Service and Orange County was tabled by the Commissioners Court Tuesday. County Judge Pro Tem David Dubose chaired the meeting and admitted he was not comfortable approving an agreement for over six million dollars without the full Court present. County Judge Brint Carlton and Commissioner John Banken were absent from the meeting. Dubose requested County Attorney Doug Manning meet with County Engineer Clark Slacum and possibly Maintenance Supervisor Kurt Guidry to review the financing agreement. A 28-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the foot early Saturday morning, Orange police report. Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the injury was with a .22 caliber rifle that the man was playing with. Acadian Ambulance took him to Beaumont St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. The shooting was reported at 12:47 a.m. Saturday at a house on Circle P in Roselawn. Two different stores had grab-and-go shoplifters during the weekend period. SUV Hits Stopped 18-Wheeler
At 11pm Monday night a Ford Explorer ran into the back of a stopped 18 wheeler on the westbound feeder road off I-10 near Crawdad's at MLK. The driver of the 18 wheeler had turned on his hazard lights and was placing emergency cones out when a 1996 white Ford Explorer, driven by Ricky Wayne Kirkland, 53, of Bridge City, drove into the back of the trailer that was carrying lumber. Kirkland and his passenger, 46 year old Terri Kirkland, were taken to a Beaumont hospital with unknown injuries.
