Friday was another day of preparing and waiting for people living along the Sabine River as water continued to rush downstream from Toledo Bend dam. The American Red Cross opened a shelter in Mauriceville at the First United Methodist Church, 11929 Highway 12. In the afternoon, the National Weather Service predicted the river in Orange would reach up to seven feet in Orange. Low Lying Areas Of Orange
The City of Orange is monitoring the Sabine River flood stage. As of 2:00 pm, the National Weather Service predicts up to seven (7) feet of water in the Sabine River, which may impact streets and structures in low lying areas. Lee Anne Brown, Orange Emergency Management Coordinator says areas of concern are downtown Orange, Cove, Brownwood, Hillbrook Estates, and Cypress bayou neighborhoods. Predicting an exact timing is difficult, but weather conditions indicate the impact of rising water as early as Sunday evening. On Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 4:51 pm, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to a shooting at a trailer park in the 12000 block of Highway 62 North. The caller stated a male subject had been shot and another male was still in the area with a shotgun. As Deputies and Detectives arrived at the trailer park, they observed an injured man, identified as 33 year old Jason Bourgeois, lying near his residence. Deweyville Preparing For Floodwater
Pickup trucks, some pulling trailers, were pulled up to the piles of sand in Deweyville by the Newton County sub courthouse. Men and women with shovels were filling the provided bags with the sand. It's a ritual for a low-lying community along the Sabine River. But this time, the National Weather Service is predicting "major, catastrophic flooding" for Deweyville. Still, people like 75-year-old Darrell Hryhorchuk say they're staying in their homes and not evacuating.
