C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Child Advocates) would like to invite all of Orange County to the Candlelight Vigil on April 25, 2016 at 7:15 p.m. to raise awareness about Child Abuse and neglect. They will have a local choir singing. Boy Scouts of America will be there. C.A.S.A. will read the Proclamation for Child Abuse Awareness which was passed in Commissioners’ Court. They are going to light 171 lanterns and release them into the sky to represent the 171 cases of Child Abuse across the State of Texas (Seven of which were from right here in the communities we serve). Sylvia Marie Bishop, of Orange, passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family, at the age of 72. Sylvia was born on December 24, 1943 in Lake Jackson, Texas to parents Esther Henrietta (Rodenbeck) and Bill McDonald Walker. She had lived in the Orange area for 65 years, and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She spent her time raising her children with love and care; helping them become the loving families they are a part of today. Dupont Drive Re-Opened
Orange Police opened DuPont Drive to traffic at noon Tuesday following an early morning accident that took out two power poles. At about 5:00 am a tan 2006 Ford Focus, left the roadway in the 1100 block of DuPont Drive. The car collided with a telephone poll, breaking it, and causing the charged power lines to fall onto the roadway. The falling wires, in turn, pulled down a second pole. A&M lead off hitter Keeli Milligan is a freshman of the year candidate. The Vidor grad is hitting .384 with 10 RBI's and leads Division I with 48 stolen bases in 51 attempts. The Aggies are an impressive 32-11 but have had trouble in the SEC where they are 6-9. Sophomore catcher Taylor Fraccastoro (LCM) has been a team leader all season for the SFA Lumberjacks. OC Health Inspections
Once again, Orange County Health Inspector James Scales was handing out A's and B's for scores. During the first two weeks of April, he went to 23 businesses or institutions dealing with food and handed out three perfect scores, including one to the Orange County Jail. The lowest score was an 83 and went to Wienerschnitzel on MacArthur Drive with violations including hot dogs at unsafe temperatures. Besides the jail, the perfect scores went to the Flava-Foods at Lamar State College-Orange Student Center and CVS on Texas Avenue in Bridge City. A woman was robbed at gunpoint late Friday night at her apartment at 1521 37th Street. Orange police were called at 11:30 p.m. to the complex. The woman said she was coming home from work and when she was at the steps to her apartment, a man grabbed her from behind and held his hand over her face. At first he demanded money and she offered him her billfold. She told police the man then demanded her cards and pressed the gun into her head.
