Gates Opened One Foot
The Sabine River Authority late Thursday morning opened five gates at Toledo Bend Reservoir one foot to increase the water release by 5,000 cubic feet per second. During the height of the March flood, SRA had all nine gates wide open at 22 feet with 208,000 cubic feet of water going out into the Sabine River. The reservoir Thursday morning reached the level of 172.36 feet. Wednesday the authority announced gates would be opened at 172.35 feet instead of the usual 172.5 feet. ORANGE LIONS CLUB Lions District 2-S1 presented a $2000 donation Monday April 21st to the Deweyville Elementary School Library Fund. District Governor Ed Stiles (center) presented the donation to Elementary Principle Ms. Lejuan Addison. The Elementary Library was destroyed by recent floods. The cities of Orange and Pinehurst have met with the Texas Department of Transportation to encourage TxDOT to improve the lighting on MacArthur Drive. During this week’s Coffee with the Mayor in the Pinehurst City Hall the subject came up again. City of Orange Councilwoman Essie Bellfield spoke passionately about the need not just for better lighting, but also that traffic lights are necessary on MacArthur Drive especially following the tragic death of a mother and her child attempting to cross the street there last year. Low Interest Loans Available
The "Small Business Administration" name is a misnomer. During a disaster, the federal agency can provide low-interest loans to homeowners, renters, schools and non-profit groups, in addition to businesses, to help them recover. The SBA and FEMA are in Orange and Newton counties to help victims of the March Sabine River flood. The deadline for filing to get assistance is May 18. Susheel Kumar, spokesperson in Orange for the SBA, said homeowners and renters may qualify for loans at an interest rate of 1.81 percent. The payback for the loans might be extended through 30 years. Orangefield Elementary will have Kindergarten Round-up on Thursday, April 28th, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. To be eligible for public school a child must be five (5) years of age on or before September 1, 2016.
