The West Orange-Stark Mustangs open the area round of the playoffs Thursday when they travel to Porter High School to play Giddings in the first game of a best of three series. The game will start at 7pm. Games 2/3 will be Friday in Porter beginning at 5pm. Giddings is 15-7 and was the fourth place team out of 21-4A. They defeated Houston Furr in two straight last week. Man Breaks In To Restaurant Again
Orange police Wednesday arrested a 45-year-old man for breaking into the Two Amigos restaurant at 3130 16th Street. The same man had been arrested on February 1 in connection with four burglaries in one week at the same restaurant. In January, liquor had been stolen and a cash register destroyed. The latest burglary was discovered about 10 Wednesday morning and detectives questioned a suspect after reviewing photographs from a surveillance camera. WO Aldermen Sworn In
West Orange swore in three Aldermen to the City Council Tuesday. Shirley Bonnin, Mike Shugart, and Dale Dardeau were given their oaths of office by former County Judge and current West Orange Alderman Carl Thibodeaux. The three ran unopposed for the City Council which allowed West Orange to cancel last Saturday’s election. Bonnin was unanimously voted by the council to continue her role as Mayor Pro-Tempore. FEMA Registration
It has been roughly two months since the flooding of the Sabine River in Orange and Newton Counties. Ray Perez with FEMA has been working to register citizens for disaster assistance during the last seven weeks. Perez said citizens have one more week to register with FEMA for this disaster. Registration for the disaster assistance closes on Wednesday, May 18. Perez stated that FEMA still has one Disaster Recovery Center open at the Newton County Senior Center on Highway 87 just south of Highway 12. Orange Opens Splash Pad
Tuesday afternoon the city of Orange had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new splash pad in Navy Park, but not everyone is happy about it. At the morning's city council meeting, Nickie Richard, who lives in the east part of town, complained. She said it's only a few sprinkler heads set in a circle of concrete. “The execution of it was a total slap in the face to the neighborhood,” she said.
