The Celebration of Life for Mrs. Luegartha Marie Cook of Orange will be Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Starlight Church of God In Christ. Rites of Christian Burial will follow in Hollywood Community Cemetery under the direction of Sparrow Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9 until 11 a.m. at the church. Joe Alford, a small-town lawyer known for valuing people more than money, died May 26 at the age of 67. His wife of 46 years, Charlotte, was with him at his death and as he went through months of cancer treatments. In an age of lawyers advertising on billboards and television, Joe didn't even have a sign on his Orange office. People found him, often by referral. Attorney Joe Alford, who had a private practice and represented several public entities, died early Thursday from cancer. He was 67 years old. Stories of his generosity and concern for others circulate throughout the area. State District Judge Dennis Powell described him as a man who valued people more than money. I-10 Accident Seriously Injures One
On May 26, 2016, at approximately 8:45 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a two vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near Adams Bayou in Orange County. A Penske moving truck towing a passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 near Adams Bayou. A Mercury passenger vehicle was traveling on the eastbound service road of the Interstate. All University Interscholastic League football state championship games will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the next two years, the UIL announced Thursday. The 11-man and six-man football championship games will be played at AT&T Stadium, with a new schedule placing all 12 games in a four-day span. Two Women Have Altercation
Orange police are investigating an incident that happened early Wednesday morning to a worker at the Flying J truck stop off Interstate 10 at Highway 62. Patrol officers were called about 4 a.m. to the store. The police report says a 9-1-1 call was made about a possible assault. The clerk says a woman with a Russian accent told her that she needed to go with her outside to see a man that was waiting in a van. When the clerk refused the woman grabbed her and began dragging her towards the door. Another employee was able to help her get away from the woman's grasp. Drug Arrest After Shooting
A Vidor man who was at the house where a woman was shot Sunday was arrested on drug charges Wednesday evening. Orange County Sheriff's Investigator Janois Grizzaffi said 52-year-old Randy L. Wasnak was arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance. Law officers arrived at his house at 3575 East Railroad Street in Vidor at 5:40 p.m. Grizzaffi said Wasnak was in the yard of the house. The officers had a search warrant and found 13 grams of methamphetamine along with drug paraphernalia. The Orange Public Library presents its 2016 Summer Reading Program. “On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!” is open to children, infant through 6th grade, with programs, story times, reading incentives and more. “On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!” includes a Read-to-Me program and a Summer Reading Club.
