Before air conditioning, the only way to cool off in the steamy, sweltering summers in Orange was to get in cool water. Generations of kids and adults jumped into the river, bayou, ponds or even rice canals. When Orange got a public swimming pool, the opening was such a big event that the 250-pound mayor pushed the chair of the pool committee off the diving board and jumped in after him. Zoning Hearing in BC
The City Council in Bridge City has set a public hearing for July 19. City Manager Jerry Jones stated the hearing concerns a request from Clint Landry to change the zoning on Center Street behind the Market Basket because he wants to locate five duplexes there. Landry is asking for a zone change from Single Family Residential to Low Density Residential. Jones said the Planning and Zoning Commission requested the public hearing which requires 15 days notice to all residents within 200 feet of the affective area. Nina Glyn Dartez passed away at the age of 90 on June 22, 2016 at Harbor Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. Nina was born November 20, 1925 in Sulphur, Louisiana to Elvin and Rosa Ellender. She grew up around the Ellender Ferry area and loved the marshes and waterways there. The happy memories she made there, fishing and exploring the land stayed with her until the very end of her life. Two Car Accident on 1442
At approximately 9:15pm Tuesday a pickup truck was traveling on 1442 near Bessie Heights Rd. when the driver decided to make a U-turn in the road and was struck by another truck. Bridge City Police didn't have many details at the time of the accident other than to say one of the trucks caught fire but the driver was pulled to safety.
