Commissioners Court drew a full court room Tuesday, many of those in attendance were elected officials in the county. The Commissioners heard a motion from County Judge Brint Carlton to abolish the pay matrix for elected officials which would allow the Court to reset the salary for all elected officials. Carlton’s motion needed a second from one of the Commissioners before a vote could be taken on it, but did not receive a second. Shoe Shop Burglarized
Vandals last week broke into Romano's Shoe Repair, one of Orange's oldest businesses. They spilled glue, threw nails around and splattered dye. "If it was on a shelf it was pushed off. If it was in a box it was thrown around," said owner Allen Nation. Also, "an expensive" black Harley Davidson leather jacket is missing, he said. The business at 1307 Green Avenue has its roots back to 1915. The Romano family moved it to the current location in 1945. Nation has owned the business "going on 30 years." Money Found In Car
Orange police found a large amount of cash and a revolver hidden in the trunk of a car that was in a ditch early Friday morning. Officers reported smelling marijuana in the car, but did not find any. A Houston man was arrested and faces a charge of felon in possession of a firearm. Lieutenant J.E. Baggett reported officers had a 9-1-1 call at 2:07 a.m. Friday about a car in a ditch off the Interstate 10 access road at the exit by Meeks Drive. Hunter Uzzle will be joining the Southland Conference as a member of the Northwestern State Demons out of Natchitoches, La. The former Bridge City catcher will take his talents to the Demons, who are welcoming a new coach. Bobby Barbier was an NSU assistant last season but was promoted last month after Lane Burroughs took the head coaching job at Louisiana Tech. OC Inspections Show Six Perfect Scores
Slime, flies and roach feces were among the problems Orange County Health Inspector James Scales found in June. Four of the 23 food businesses scored in the mid-80s for health inspection violations while six made perfect scores. Scales went to 23 businesses and institutions during the last part of June. Perfect scores went to the Vidor High School and Vidor Junior High cafeterias serving the summer feeding program. The West Orange-Stark High School cafeteria also made a 100. BC Insurance Approved
The City Council in Bridge City awarded the contracts Tuesday for insurance to cover the city employees during the next fiscal year. Aetna will be the medical insurance replacing Blue Cross which went up 64 percent from last year. Currently, Bridge City pays $641.64 per employee per month. By accepting the Aetna plan the cost per employee will only go up slightly according to City Manager Jerry Jones. Employees will have a deductible of $6,350 and a co-pay of $30 for doctor visits and $60 for seeing a specialist.
