A bit of local history sounds more like a fairy tale. Once upon a time, the city of Pinehurst had no property taxes. The city was able to rely on sales taxes alone for a two-year period. Pinehurst City Council meetings show property taxes were eliminated in August 1989 after voters approved a half-cent per dollar increase in the city sales taxes. The heyday of MacArthur Shopping Center had passed by that time, but the Sears store was still operating in the center off MacArthur Drive. Becker Now Auxiliary Airman
Overcoming a fear has led a young man in Bridge City to excel and has given him a goal for his future. Sheldon Becker at age 15 will be entering ninth grade this year at Bridge City High School. A year ago Sheldon got involved in the Civil Air Patrol at the Jack Brooks Airport in Nederland and is now a United States Air Force Auxiliary airman. Sheldon tells that what first got him interested in flying was he was scared of heights. He wanted to get over his fear of heights. First Time First Responder
Many young people dream of becoming a first responder as either a police officer or as a fire fighter. Thursday a young man in Pinehurst got to experience being both. Tommy Craig is age 25 and has autism. Shannon Lee is a close friend of Tommy, and she is also a lifelong friend with Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer. Lee called Hanauer, and he arranged for Tommy to get up close and personal with the police and fire departments in Pinehurst. Auditorium Named For Bryant
The Bridge City is honoring long-time teacher and musician Ann Bryant by naming the stage area at the elementary school in her honor. The dedication will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, at the school, 1035 West Roundbunch Road. The Ann Bryant Auditorium pays tribute to the woman who taught in the school district for 56 years. She spent a total of 62 years in public education after beginning as a teacher at the old Colburn Elementary School in Orange in 1948. Truck Rolls Over Man
A 36-year-old Groves man was injured Monday when the pickup truck he was working on rolled over him at a truck stop parking lot. The truck then rolled out into the highway and hit a traveling vehicle. The incident was about 2:30 p.m. in the Flying J Travel Plaza off Interstate 10 at Highway 62. Orange police said Ryan Sullivan was working on his Dodge Ram pickup in the southwest corner of the parking lot. The truck began to roll and he ran to try to stop it.
