Prospects of the postseason for the Deweyville Pirates got a lot brighter with realignment earlier this year. The Pirates were lowered in classification and are now in Class 2A, Division I. Coach Lance Dale believes Deweyville will be more competitive playing schools closer to its size and with the same amount of depth as the Pirates. Rayford "Scoopie" Riggs, 67, of Beaumont, TX, entered eternal life on Monday, August 8, 2016, at Harbor Hospital in Beaumont, TX. A native of Orange, TX, Rayford was born on April 26, 1949, to Robert and Ollie "Lucy" Riggs. Rayford attended schools in Orange and was a member of the Class of 1968 at Emma H. Wallace High School. He accepted Christ at an early age and united with Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. OC Schools Hold Joint Convocation
Almost 1,000 educators from West Orange-Cove, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Bridge City and Orangefield met at the Lutcher Theater on Thursday morning, August 11. To start the program off, a combined band of musicians from each high school played the National Anthem. The joint convocation was held so that as many school employees as possible could hear motivational/inspirational author and speaker Jon Gordon, who lived up to his reputation as an outstanding speaker. West Nile Mosquitoes Found In Vidor
The Texas Department of Health in Austin has informed the Orange County Mosquito Control District that the first samples this year of mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile Virus were found this month. Director Patrick Beebe said the collection of positive mosquitoes were found in the Vidor area on August 2. The collection came from north of I-10, south of Sawmill Rd, east of Hwy. 105, and west of Doty Rd. Beebe said his department will step up treatments in that area.
