Less than two weeks before school is scheduled to start the Deweyville Independent School District is working hard to have facilities ready for students to attend classes. Deweyville School Superintendent Kevin Clark said the community is recovering from March’s record flood. He has seen a lot of construction going on in the neighborhoods and people getting settled back in. Not everyone will be coming back to Deweyville. Orange Council Looks At Budget
The Orange City Council and City of Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors will learn the proposed budgets for the upcoming fiscal year that starts October 1. Both groups have called special meetings to receive the budgets from the city staff. The EDC board will meet at 8:30 a.m. and the city council will meet at 9 a.m. Both meet in the council auditorium next to the Orange Public Library. The city council has been holding budget workshops with the city staff during the summer. The council has tentatively agreed to a tax rate of 70.96 cents per $100 valuation. Natatorium Closes For Summer
The Orange Natatorium is now closed for the season, two days before the scheduled closing. The city today announced an equipment failure led to the pool being closed on Thursday and Friday. The natatorium opened on June 6 and was set to be open through the end of Friday. Last year the city didn't open the pool for the summer because of a lack of lifeguards. This year, the city council agreed to raise the salaries of lifeguards and pay for their certification training. Waste Water Treatment Plant A Possibility
The possible funding of a waste water treatment plant is still in the works. A coalition of local cities and counties has been working to receive part of the settlement by British Petroleum (BP) stemming from the Deep Water Horizon disaster. Pinehurst City Administrator Robbie Hood provided an update this week on the BP settlement. The coalition has met a couple of times in the last few months. The cosmos is lining up for a special light show but the weather across Southeast Texas might not cooperate for sky watchers. The National Weather Service is predicting cloudy skies Thursday and Friday nights when NASA says the Perseids meteor shower will be twice as active as usual. The Perseids meteor shower comes toward the middle of August every year. The meteors are debris left by the Swift-Tuttle Comet, which circles the sun every 133 years.
