The Orangefield Bobcats are coming out of the summer workouts and the preseason scrimmages in their best shape in the five years Josh Smalley has been their head coach. The Bobcats play a very familiar foe in the Buna Cougars to open the season; the teams have played each other over 50 times. Coach Smalley points out the two offenses both run the Slot-T. Accident at 62 & 2802
At approximately 6:20p.m. on Wednesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 62 and FM 2802 in Orange County. A 1994 Ford pickup truck was traveling northbound on Highway 62. A 1999 Honda passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 62. The driver of the Ford attempted to make left turn onto FM 2802 and struck the Honda. Lewis Achieves Eagle Scout Status
Layne Ashton Lewis is the latest Orange native to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. A Court of Honor ceremony was held at First Baptist Church Orange. Layne is the son of Jeff Lewis and Terri Lewis. He is a member of the Three Rivers Council Troop 23 of Sabine District, chartered to the First Baptist Church Orange. To earn his rank of Eagle, a Layne earned at least 21 merit badges and 12 Eagle Scout badges. An Eagle Scout must demonstrate leadership and community service by organizing and carrying out an Eagle Project. The scrimmages are over and now the games that count begin. The Bridge City Cardinals are in good shape as the season starts this Friday night. Coach Dwayne DuBois starts his second season as the Cardinals’ head coach against the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns who will be looking for a new quarterback to replace Kendrick King and have a new head coach. Council Turns Down Restrooms
The Orange City Council Tuesday rejected a plan to build restrooms at the Riverfront Pavilion but will reconsider the proposal at another meeting. The restrooms had been eliminated from original plans for the pavilion, park and riverwalk four years ago after the cost was two high. City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the plans were to gradually add more features to the overall project, including the restrooms. The city opened the riverfront pavilion three years ago and has rented portable potties for events. One Vehicle Accident Monday
A 27-year-old man was injured Monday night after he ran off the roadway in the 5600 block of Meeks Drive and hit two trees in a yard. Orange Police report Devin Scott Baugh was not seriously injured and a patrol officer drove him to Baptist Hospital Orange Emergency Room. Police report the collision was about 10 p.m. Monday in a house north of the Allie Payne Road intersection. Baugh was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck northbound. Court Discusses Line Item Transfers
Routine business made up most of the Commissioners Court’s agenda Tuesday with approval of line item transfers of funds. One of them that was not routine dealt with the transfer of over $12,000 to pay a part-time employee in Records Management. Commissioner Jody Crump did not recall the Court approving the part-timer and there was no money allocated previously in the account to pay the employee. Bears Travel To Jasper Friday
Friday night the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears open the season against a familiar opponent in the Jasper Bulldogs. Coach Randy Crouch indicates the Bears have come out of the preseason workouts and two scrimmages in pretty good shape and are ready for the Bulldogs. Coach Crouch points out Jasper lost to graduation their star quarterback Tiger Williams who was the centerpiece of the Bulldogs’ offense last season.
