The City of Pinehurst had a large crowd at their Annual Senior Citizens Labor Day Picnic Monday. The music was furnished by the Big Thicket Band. Pinehurst Mayor Pete Runnels recognized Brian Braud and the Little Cypress Lions Club and Dayle Gunn/ Weatherford and the Orange Blossom Dancers in appreciation for their service and dedication to the City of Pinehurst. Blacktop was going onto a section of Meeks Drive and the city's contract workers were supposed to be finished with the main part Friday, according to Orange Public Works Director Jim Wolf. People who live and work along the section of roadway under construction have put up with rough roads, dust and heavy equipment for almost five weeks. The project was supposed to take a week. Wolf said rain in August hindered the work because of an additive the contractor used in the base for the road. The base won't set correctly if it gets wet. Orange Fire Marshal John Bilbo said an apartment fire Thursday night is being investigated as arson because it started in multiple places. No one was home at the time and the contents were destroyed, he said. The Orange Fire Department was called about 8 p.m. Thursday to the Sabine Park Apartments, 111 West Pine Avenue off Simmons Drive. Bilbo said the next door neighbors were also not home and the fire and smoke did not affect any other units.
