Judges Speak At Commissioners Court
There will be no raises in salary for elected officials in Orange County next year. Tuesday the Commissioners Court voted 3-2 for salaries of elected officials in the county to remain the same next fiscal year. County Judge Brint Carlton made the motion for no change in salaries, and he was joined by Commissioners Barry Burton and Jody Crump. Immediately following that vote Commissioner John Banken made a motion to cut $1,000 a month from the salaries of each member on the Commissioners Court saying it would save the county $60,000 for the next fiscal year. LCM Hosts OF For Homecoming
A change in offense resulted in a change of fortunes for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears. Coach Randy Crouch is proud of the effort made by the Bears prior to the game. A good week of practices got LC-M prepared for the game with Hardin-Jefferson. Crouch comments, “They worked really hard to do what they needed to do, and we had a good outcome.” This week LC-M plays the Orangefield Bobcats. Orange Council Hands Out Money
The train depot restoration will be getting more money courtesy of the Orange City Council. The council Tuesday decided to give more hotel tax money than the Friends of the Orange Depot requested. The city's Convention and Visitors Bureau advisory committee recommended giving the group its requested $15,000. The council decided to give $25,000. District 4 Councilor Annette Pernell, who lives in the Old Orange Historic District near the train depot, suggested the increase in money. Last week was one the Bridge City Cardinals would like to put behind them. The Cardinals took it on the chin from top ranked West Orange-Stark and an ugly incident involving two of the players was made public prior to the game. Coach Dwayne DuBois says both players will face consequences for their actions, but the coach is not at liberty to disclose what their penalties will be at this time. Born Henry Allen Burkart on August 4, 1932 in Orange, Texas the only child of James Milton Burkart and Nellie V. Bowler-Burkart. Allen grew up in Orange, Texas in the Cove. He attended St. Mary's School and later Stark High School. He played football for both teams. He graduated in 1950. He served in the Army during the Korean war. After he returned to Orange he worked in the air conditioning industry. Accident On I-10 Near 1442
A Dodge Charger was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 near FM 1442 when it rear-ended a passenger vehicle. After the Dodge collided with the passenger vehicle, it slammed into the concrete center divider before coming to rest. According to witnesses, the driver of the Dodge was traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic. Confederate Memorial Raises Flag
September 11 will go down in history as the day the Sons of Confederate Veterans raised the first flag at their memorial park off Interstate 10 at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. On Sunday, the confederate group mowed the grass at the site and raised the flag of the Army of Trans Mississippi. The commander of the Orange County chapter of the sons said the ceremony was held because the members of the group had gathered for the commemoration of the Battle of Sabine Pass. No Tax Increase In Orange
No one from the public spoke during a public hearing Tuesday for the new city of Orange budget and tax rate. The 2017 budget year will be the fourth without a property tax increase, but At-Large Councilor Larry Spears said this would be the last year for no increase. City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre said "We've squeezed all we could out of our revenue." He said next year the city will negotiate new contracts with union police and firefighters.
