Born Henry Allen Burkart on August 4, 1932 in Orange, Texas the only child of James Milton Burkart and Nellie V. Bowler-Burkart. Allen grew up in Orange, Texas in the Cove. He attended St. Mary's School and later Stark High School. He played football for both teams. He graduated in 1950. He served in the Army during the Korean war. Accident On I-10 Near 1442
A Dodge Charger was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 near FM 1442 when it rear-ended a passenger vehicle. After the Dodge collided with the passenger vehicle, it slammed into the concrete center divider before coming to rest. According to witnesses, the driver of the Dodge was traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic. Confederate Memorial Raises Flag
September 11 will go down in history as the day the Sons of Confederate Veterans raised the first flag at their memorial park off Interstate 10 at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. On Sunday, the confederate group mowed the grass at the site and raised the flag of the Army of Trans Mississippi. The commander of the Orange County chapter of the sons said the ceremony was held because the members of the group had gathered for the commemoration of the Battle of Sabine Pass. No Tax Increase In Orange
No one from the public spoke during a public hearing Tuesday for the new city of Orange budget and tax rate. The 2017 budget year will be the fourth without a property tax increase, but At-Large Councilor Larry Spears said this would be the last year for no increase. City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre said "We've squeezed all we could out of our revenue." He said next year the city will negotiate new contracts with union police and firefighters. On Sunday, September 11, 2016, about 7:50 p.m., the Vidor Police Department Street Crimes Unit conducted Narcotics Investigations at a residence in the City of Vidor. Woman Admits Theft
Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer said information from the public led him to the woman who was caught on surveillance video taking donated items from a charity. The chief said she will face a Class C misdemeanor theft charge because the blanket and mirror she admitted to taking did not have a large value. The woman has not been arrested and charged, though she talked with the chief. The Class C misdemeanor will be filed in Pinehurst Municipal Court.
