George Pixley Padgett, Jr., 80, of Orange, Texas, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. He was born in Brownsville, Texas, to Lorena M. and George Padgett, Sr., before moving to Orange in 1941. He graduated from Little Cypress High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked at Allied Chemical and Ausimont USA in Orange, until retirement in 2000. He enjoyed wood carving, working in stained lead glass, and raising roses. Free Diabetes Educational Class
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension along with Orange County Social Services County Indigent Health Care Program will be holding a series in Bridge City. The classes will begin Wednesdays, October 26th and will meet each Wednesday for four weeks with the last class on November 16th. Classes will be held at the Bridge City Senior Citizen Hall, 101 Parkside Bridge City from 2pm to 4pm. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Board of Trustees recognized two students and several businesses during the October Board meeting on Monday, October 3. Matthew Cox and Thomas King are seniors who have been Commended by the National Merit Scholarship Program. BC Back On Friday Night Schedule
Two straight open weeks have the Bridge City Cardinals ready to get back on the football field and to start hitting guys in a different colored jersey. Coach Dwayne DuBois indicates the two weeks helped heal some bumps and bruises so the Cardinals will be healthy coming into district action this week. The two weeks were used to correct some holes in the Bridge City offense and defense. DuBois says the coaches went back to basics, corrected some mistakes that were being made, and moved some personnel around. Logs Have New Home
The Texas Department of Transportation, which operates the state travel information centers, will be getting six logs that were part of the original 1936 tourist bureau in Orange. Orange City Council last week approved an interlocal agreement to donate the logs to be used at the local center on Interstate 10 at the Texas-Louisiana border. TxDOT spokeswoman Sarah Dupre said the agency does not have a specific plan for the logs at this time. OC Restaurant Reports
Some stores and restaurants inspected during the last part of September had problems with mold in ice machines and slush machines. Also, a dead mouse was found at one. But otherwise, the food businesses fared well. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales handed out a lot of A's. The lowest score was an 87 and went to Zapco Food Mart at 18548 Highway 62 South outside of Orangefield. Scales gave perfect scores to The Garden District in Little Cypress, J.B.'s Barbecue in Orange and Luigi's Italian Grill in West Orange.
