County Looking For Burglary Suspects
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls in the past 2 weeks in reference to burglaries of vehicles in the North Vidor area. Some items reportedly stolen were tools, purses, credit cards, and cash. Earlier this week, Orange County Investigators canvassed the areas where the burglaries occurred and followed up on several leads. These efforts led Investigators to several persons of interest who are currently being questioned about their possible involvement. Honor Society Welcomes New Members
On Friday evening, December 2nd, The Alpha Nu Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society welcomed 31 new members for the spring 2016 semester. The Induction Ceremony was held in the Lamar State College-Orange Student Center gym. Fifteen inductees and over 30 additional guests attended, as well as Phi Theta Kappa officers and advisors. Group Concerned With Barges
A press conference was held Tuesday morning in the Commissioners Courtroom concerning a problem that has been on going on the Neches River. Citizens have been seeking action from the Texas General Land Office to cause a company to cease using fleet barges in the Bessie Heights Marsh. The Savage Inland Marine fleeting company held a public meeting last week to explain what they were doing. Tuesday’s press conference was in response to that one. Commissioners Approve Tax Abatements
The Commissioners Court approved tax abatements for eight residential properties in Vidor at Tuesday’s meeting. The properties are all part of the Pride and Progress program begun earlier this year in Vidor and which Orange County joined in June. Vidor Mayor Robert Viator attended the meeting. He informed that at least two of the properties already have families in them. Viator reminded that the tax abatements are good for seven years on a graduated scale for the new home owners. Homeowners Want W.Bluff Road Repaired
Jimmy Burnitt is ready to build a new house along the Sabine River, but first he wants his road fixed. Instead of turning to Orange County to repair the rural road, he needs the city of Orange, which owns West Bluff Road. Burnitt, a lawyer retired from the Texas Attorney General's Office, said he discovered the city annexed West Bluff Road in 1968. The road is now in such bad shape car's are damaged. He said one elderly woman now needs to buy a new car. Even though the road is legally in the city, none of the people living along the road are in the city limits. The LCM Lady Bears lost to Liberty at home 55-31 Tuesday. The Bears got off to a rough start thanks to a lot of turnovers. LCM didn't score their first bucket until 1:23 left in the first and had a hard time catching up to the Lady Panthers. Alyssa McKellar led the Lady Bears with 16 points. Renna Toomey added 5. LCM was 9-23 from the free throw line. The LCM JV beat Liberty by a score of 42-33. - The LCM boys lost at Kountze 68-56. LCM ran into trouble in the second quarter, being outscored 22-5.
