Bettye Patton Gilstrap was born in Silverton, Texas on 1/30/1930 and departed for her next journey on the morning of December 28, 2016. Bettye graduated from Stark High School in 1948 in Orange, Texas and was employed with Dupont Chemical Company for 36 years. She retired in 1985 and followed her dream to move to Colorado, residing in Montrose. Bettye was and avid golfer and spent many happy days at Black Canyon Golf Club. There, she developed many meaningful friendships that remained throughout her life. Accident Claims Two From Orange
At approximately 12:15p.m. Tuesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 10, near Vidor, in Orange County. The crash occurred near mile marker 858. An Isuzu flatbed truck was traveling westbound in the inside lane of Interstate 10. A Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer towing construction equipment was also traveling westbound on the Interstate behind the Isuzu truck. Former Sheriff Assists Victims
Two teenage girls were seriously injured Tuesday morning when the SUV in which they were riding flipped over end-to-end on a rural Jefferson County road. Help was immediately there. Former Orange County Sheriff Mike White was traveling behind them and stopped. After years in law enforcement, White is accustomed to crashes and crimes. He knew how to help. "I was just trying to keep them calm," he said. "They both had head injuries and were bleeding a lot." He talked to them and tried to keep them focused, even though they were in pain. The quiet, well-behaved students sat politely and listened to tributes Tuesday morning from the Orange City Council. "Y'all have done something that's a magnificent feat," Councilmember Bill Mello said to the teenagers. The council honored the West Orange-Stark Mustangs football team and staff for winning a second straight state championship. Mayor Jimmy Sims read a proclamation saying the group "exemplifies exceptional sportsmanship, talent and hardworking athletes." Commissioners Meet Tuesday
Tuesday at the weekly Commissioners Court meeting, Valli Lott the retiring director of the Transportation Department in the county was thanked for her two decades of service to Orange County. Lott, standing in front of Commissioner Barry Burton, Judge Brint Carlton and Commissioner Jody Crump, was presented a plaque, and she wants to work around her home doing some painting and sewing during retirement.
