Filings For Election Begin
Two incumbents have filed for re-election in the Bridge City ISD board election. Michael C. Johnson filed for Place 6 and Mark Anderson filed for Place 7. No challengers have filed. Elections for city councils and school boards will be May 6 and filing started on Wednesday. Incumbent Ruth Hancock is the only person to file for the two open seats on the West Orange-Cove school board. County Town Hall Meetings Next Week
Two are better than one! The Commissioners Court had a strong response to its Town Hall Meeting in October held at the Courthouse’s Administration Building. Next week the Commissioners will hold two Town Hall Meetings at the Orange County Convention and Expo Center. Both meetings will be on Thursday, January 26, the first at 2:00 PM and the second at 7:00 PM. Phelan Files Bill 1188
State Representative Dade Phelan has filed House Bill 1188 requiring newly purchased school buses to be equipped with three-point seat belts. A bus operated by or contracted for use by a school district for the transportation of schoolchildren shall be equipped with a three-point seat belt for each passenger, including the operator. This legislation does not apply to buses purchased before September 1, 2017. In 2015, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reversed their policy and stated that newly purchased school buses should have a three-point seat belt system. Man Arrested For Drug Possession
Justice of the Peace Hershel Stagner Jr. set a total of $30,000 bond Friday on a 21-year-old man arrested for drugs after Orange police searched a house. Several firearms reported as stolen were also found in the house, though charges related to the guns have not been filed. Rodney Dove has been charged with state jail felony possession of marijuana for having more than four ounces. He also faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance in connection with Ecstasy pills that were found at the house.
