  Orange police arrested a Colorado man during a break-in Sunday afternoon at the Jeep/Dodge dealership on Interstate 10. An alarm and surveillance live video helped. In another weekend case, a home surveillance camera on Hillbrook Drive is helping police track down two people who stole a delivered package from a house. Police went to Cecil Atkission at 4:11 p.m. Sunday after an alarm company informed them of someone inside the dealership. Softball Preview: Bridge City

Bridge City had a great season in Coach Kayla Gallardo’s first season in charge of the program.   The Lady Cardinals went undefeated in district and won 29 of 33 games last year.  Graduation has taken away some key Lady Cardinals, but Gallardo still has some quality talent to build a winner around.  That starts with the whole pitching staff Kassidy Wilbur, Peyton Trapp, and Summer Black returning for Bridge City.  The Lady Cardinals infield is all returning except for the shortstop.  There are some positions to fill in the outfield.  Gallardo believes, “We’re going to be just as strong as … [Read more...] about Softball Preview: Bridge City

Mustangs Qualify For UIL State Contest

WOS High School choir students earn advancement to state solo, ensemble contest  Six West Orange - Stark High School choir students have earned advancement to the State UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest in May. The students, under the direction of Caleb Henson, are (see photo) front row, Rita Jenkins, Alexcia Tezeno, Claydra Rhodes; and, back row,  Manuel Franklin, Jared Dupree, and Dwaun Guidry.  The students qualified at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest held at Lumberton High School in January. Bears Want Postseason Return

Last season the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears were in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Lady Bears came up just a little bit short losing a play-in game to the Orangefield Lady Bobcats. Five freshmen started on that young Lady Bears team, so Coach Dena Adkins has plenty of experience returning for this year. Senior Jenna James should spend a lot of time in the circle for LC-M. Ashley Short spent time in right field last year and is back. Makayla Dyer will be at third base again. Kaitlin Huff returns and is one of the fastest girls on the team. Orange Woman Involved In Accident

At approximately 3:00p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a one vehicle crash on Highway 87 in Newton County.  The crash occurred just south of Bleakwood. OC Sales Tax Numbers

Local entities have received sales tax checks from the Texas Comptroller's Office covering the month of December. Based on sales tax income received during the first two months of the calendar year, collections are down compared to last year for some of the entities. The amounts received for the month and the year to date are: Bridge City (1.5 percent sales tax): $154,988 for the month and $272,748 for the year to date. Phelan Receives Assignments

  Speaker Joe Straus has announced House committee assignments for the 85th Legislative Session. Representative Dade Phelan will be Vice-Chair of Natural Resources and serve on Appropriations, Calendars and the Select Committee on Texas Ports, Innovation & Infrastructure.
