Orange County Judge Brint Carlton said taxpayers should not have to pay extra to cover the $3.2 million the county paid for a lost lawsuit stemming from the death of a jail inmate. "I am wholly against a tax increase to pay for something like this," he told about 50 people attending at Town Hall meeting Monday evening at the county expo center. The Twin Lakes Subdivision Phase 2 includes 22 lots in Orangefield and is located in the extra territorial jurisdiction of Bridge City. Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt is pleased to announce the Eighth Orange County Citizen’s Sheriff’s Academy. The academy is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 21, 2017 and will end with a commencement ceremony tentatively set for April 27, 2017. The woman inmate in the Orange County Jail who was found hanging in a holding cell Friday night has died. She was identified as 35-year-old Rosa Bonilla. She had been arrested by Orange police on a misdemeanor drug charge earlier Friday. She had been taken to a Beaumont hospital in critical condition after a jailer discovered her. Sunday at approximately 1:15p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to an eight (8) vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Orange County. The crash occurred on the Neches River Bridge. A 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 followed by a 2014 Ford Mustang. The driver of the Chevrolet reduced his speed for stopped traffic and was rear-ended by the Ford.
