One hundred years ago today (April 6) the United States entered World War I by declaring war on Germany. A number of men from Orange went into the Army because their unique skills were needed. They were lumbermen. "Sending lumber to Europe was expensive and time consuming. With lumber supplies low, the US allies asked for experienced lumbermen. The 20th Engineer Regiment formed in 1917 to cut down trees and mill them in France," reads a display in the Stark House. The W.H. The State of Texas General Land Office presented the City of Orange a certificate honoring their extraordinary efforts in the completion of the Texas General Land Office Hurricane Ike Community Development and Revitalization Program – Round 2.1. Grand Jury Returns Indictments
A federal grand jury returned multiple indictments this week charging individuals with separate federal crimes in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston. Jonathan Derick Hickey, 35, of Orange, Texas, was indicted on charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted, he faces from 10 years to life in federal prison. Local Martial Arts Team Performs Well
On March 17th and 18th at the Galveston Island Convention Center at San Luis Resort, Tiger Rock Martial Arts of Bridge City attended a landmark Tiger Rock National Championship. This event hosted more than 1200 competitors from all over the State. Tiger Rock Martial Arts of Bridge City brought a record 45 students to this event. Competing in events of Traditional Forms, Sport Sparring, One-Steps, Extreme Performance (XP) Weapons Competition, Agility, and Board Breaking. George Springer hit a towering three-run homer with two out in the 13th inning to send the Astros to a 5-3 walk-off win over the Mariners on Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park. Houston improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2001. Health Inspections
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales continues to find problems at some food businesses with problems including dead roaches, spider webs and mold. Also, some places are given demerits for lacking proper hand-washing supplies. Scales went to 21 places having food during the latter part of March with six getting perfect scores. The lowest was a 75 and went to the Stop-N-Shop at 111 Green Avenue in Orange. The McDonald's in Vidor had a 78 with problems including cooked eggs stored at room temperature and dirty utensils. Sign Ordinance To Be Changed
Businessman Jim Gilliam will be able to keep up the new sign he built for his downtown building. Records show he has spent at least $400,000 renovating the site. The Orange Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday approved a plan to allow signs on to be up to 10 feet tall in the Old Town Center. The regulations currently restrict a sign to being no taller than three feet in the area. Gilliam's sign was taller. Romero Well Ready In BC
The City Council received good news Tuesday in Bridge City concerning the water well system in the city. Mayor David Rutledge expressed the thankfulness of Bridge City to the Sabine River Authority for a $10,000 grant it gave to the city to help repair the Romero Well. Later City Manager Jerry Jones shared more good news with the City Council that repairs to the well have been completed and it should be operational shortly. Allene M. Cooper Knox born January 7, 1930 to Kirby Cooper Sr. and Lola Bell Southwell Cooper. She was called home to glory on April 2, 2017 at Memorial Herman Hospital of Beaumont, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 of years Richard W. Knox , parents, and siblings Marie Boatner, Jerry Cooper, Emma Bluitt, Henry Cooper, Corine Cooper, Kirby Cooper Jr, and Charlene Morris.
