St. Mary School Announces Closure

St. Mary School in Orange, which has been educating students for over 100 years, has announced today that they will close at the end of the school year. Bishop David Toups said in a statement to the St. Mary community, “It is with a very heavy heart that I write to share this news of our school's closure at the end of this academic year. The parents of St. Mary Catholic School have placed their trust in our school, and to you I am most especially grateful, and with you I grieve over this news. Newton Co. Sheriff’s Report

by Sheriff Colton Havard We have been getting a lot of calls about people’s dogs running on their neighbor’s property. If you are a dog owner, please be responsible and keep your dog on your own property. This will greatly reduce our call volume. Deputies were busy last week conducting pro-active criminal enforcement that resulted in 7 individuals being arrested for various charges. Yesterday, I attended the funeral of Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox. Sandra Kay Platt Snow, born on December 31, 1964, passed away in the early morning hours of January 31, 2025, at the age of 60. Manning, Floyd WRS Finalists

The Beaumont Founders Lions Club released the finalists for the Willie Ray Smith Awards which celebrates the top offensive and defensive football player in Southeast Texas as voted on by the media. Orangefield's Mason Manning is an offensive finalist. Manning had 1945 all-purpose yards for the district champion Bobcats. He joins Cam Dischler and Beau Daville as Bobcat finalists. Daville won the award in 1998. Joining Manning on the offensive side of the table are Silsbee QB Michael Moshier, HF QB Ty Bryson, and Nederland RB Hubert Thomas. Cards Help Cards Win

The Lamar University Cardinals baseball team scored six runs in the top of the second and never looked back in its 17-1 win over California State University, Bakersfield on Friday night at Hardt Field. A couple of Bridge City Cardinals helped Big Red to victory. Starting pitcher Peyton Havard (left) retired six straight batters to keep the game scoreless heading into the top of the third. Congratulations to Orangefield's Kaleb Menard who was selected to the THSCA 3A Elite Team. He was the only player from Orange County to make the team. The THSCA Super Elite Teams consists of high school players nominated by current professional members of the Texas High School Coaches Association. Bears Play In Baytown

The Lady Bears started the year off strong by finishing their first tournament with 4 wins and 2 losses at the Goose Creek/Baytown Tournament. They lost to Iowa Colony 3-2 and LaPorte 5-2 while some of their athletes were playing basketball. Then they won four in a row with wins over Humble, Sam Rayburn, CE King, and Houston Lamar. As a team, the Lady Bears outscored their opponents 59-14, racking up 51 hits on the weekend, including 30 singles, 12 doubles, 4 triples, and 5 home runs.
