Born in Saskatchewan, Canada on September 2, 1927, the family moved to farm in Kossuth County, Iowa when Phyllis was 7 years old. She grew up attending a one-room country school and, determined to go to college, her parents moved to Ames, Iowa so that she could attend Iowa State. She married soon after graduation and moved to Orange, Texas where her husband had taken a job with DuPont. Although not a native Texan, Phyllis quickly became a proud Texan. Several Fires In Area Wednesday
Looking from Orange it looked like everything to the South was on fire Wednesday afternoon. Two large controlled marsh fires were burning to the south of Chemical Row. The fires were started because of a strong north wind to keep the smoke out of the area. They are done yearly to manage wetlands and other habitats, control invasive species, and reduce fuel loads. There was also a brush fire off of Irving St. in West Orange, the WOFD along with Little Cypress and Bridge City fought and later tapped out. Woman Finds Sisters Ashes After Fire
Kasey Kotara drove from her home in Orange to Sinton on Wednesday, determined to find her older sister Octavia's ashes after her mother's house burned down. "I told him I'm looking for an urn, if it's still intact," she said. "It's bright red, you can't miss it. My sister's in there, so I need to find it." Robert Alan Beard, 45, of Bridge City, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. He was born in Jasper, Texas, on October 5,1979, to Debra Wright Shorten and the late Robert Lee Beard. He attended Orangefield High School until 1998. In 2000, he joined the US Army to serve our country and was honorably discharged in 2002. BC Hosts Golf Tournament
On Monday, local golf teams competed in Bridge City Invitational, which was held at Sunset Country Club in Orange. Orangefield's Lincoln Parks finished as the 1st Place medalist, shooting a 1 over par 72. Parks, Zack Morrow, Peyton Revia, Branden Greenway, and Gavin Gravett also finished second as a team.
