The Orangefield School board approved the hiring of a new band director at Orangefield High School during a special meeting Monday night at the administration building. Superintendent Dr. Stephen Patterson elaborated on the new band director Kevin Credeur’s background saying Credeur comes to Orangefield from the Barbers Hill school district. He is a graduate of Lamar University and has begun work on his Master’s degree. Patterson emphasizes that Credeur was enthusiastic about the Orangefield program, and Patterson feels Credeur will be a good fit for Orangefield. Credeur inherits a strong band program at Orangefield which made a One in the state competition this year. Enterprise Products is considering building a plant in the district to liquefy natural gas which they will ship worldwide. An extension of the 151-day negotiation time period with the school district has been asked for by Enterprise according to Dr. Patterson. The school board approved granting the extension request, and Patterson adds that hopefully there will be a formal announcement coming from Enterprise in the very near future that they are beginning work on the site. The new plant would mean increased tax revenues for the school district. The extension will run through December 2014.

Orangefield’s Josh Ferguson is part of the high school band percussion section that adds the beats and rhythms to the Friday night football games. He plays bass drum, xylophone, bells, cymbals and snares. His enthusiasm is obvious. He marches in step, moves to the rhythms and sings the words to the school fight song.
Josh has Down syndrome and is in his second year performing with the Bobcat Band at Orangefield High School. Band director Lonnie Ferrell said he welcomed Josh despite his handicap. ‘He started three years ago and did beginning band at the junior high,’ Ferrell said. ‘When he moved over to the high school, he became part of the high school band.’

Last season was the first as head coach for Josh Smalley at Orangefield. That first season served as a great learning experience for Smalley. “It was a fun year, exciting year, learned a lot. You know it didn’t finish the way we wanted it to finish. We ended up 4 and 6, one game out of the playoffs, ended up losing the last game by 11 and kept us home in the playoff hunt,” Smalley recalled. Coach Smalley had an abbreviated off season with his Bobcats last year, and he believes things are looking up for Orangefield for this coming season. Smalley noted they have some key personnel coming back including all of their running backs and all of their offensive line. A full off season with the kids, a full summer, the kids worked extremely hard getting bigger and stronger which has Smalley counting on that to help the Bobcats’ cause come the fall.
Denny Downing has been hired as the new girls basketball coach at Orangefield, replacing Katie Sanders after one season. Downing was the women’s basketball coach at Texas Pan-Am University in Edinberg the past four seasons. The Oklahoma native was among the group of head coaches who were released after the school brought in a new athletic director. He was replaced by Larry Tidwell who was the women’s coach at Lamar. Downing said it’s part of the business. “We had the best winning percentage in my four years there and this year we had 12 wins, including one over TCU, with six freshmen playing. But the new AD wanted to go into a different direction.” Before going to Pan Am he lead Texas A&M Commerce to their first ever conference title in 2007. Coaching high school basketball will be new for Downing who has spent most of his career in the collegiate ranks. “I’m excited about the challenge and I’m well aware of tradition of the Lady Bobcats,” he said. “Basketball is basketball but the biggest transition for me may be playing without a shot clock.” Orangefield Athletic Director Josh Smalley said the Bobcats are fortunate. “We’re late in the summer and still looking for a coach then all of a sudden I’m talking with a man who has collegiate experience and wants to come here. It’s a blessing and we’re looking for good things from Coach Downing.” Most high school coaches also have a second sport. Downing will also coach the Bobcat Cross Country team.
Orangefield High School Senior,Brittney Ashworth, (pic. right) was recently appointed as Varsity Cheer Captain. Brittney has been cheering for the Bobcats for the past 6 years, beginning her cheerleading endeavor as a 7th grader. Brittney has been honored as an UCA All American Cheerleader, a Cheer Hawaii 2013 participant, and is involved in Competition Cheer for BGA. Brittney is the daughter of Chris and Nancy Ashworth. Kirsten Wolfford (left), also an O.H.S. senior, was named co-captain. Kirsten has been a cheerleader for 3 years, was named UCA All American, and was a Cheer Hawaii 2013 participant. Kirsten is the daughter of Greg and Staci Wolfford.
After just one season, Orangefield girls basketball coach Katie Sanders is leaving to take the Middle School Coordinator position in the Pflugerville School District. Sanders, a 2006 OF grad, was 16-13 in her first job as a head coach and lead the Bobcats to the second round of the playoffs.
