The Orangefield Bobcats are one week away from the 3A Region III Final. But to get there they have to beat a Rockdale Tiger team in a three game series that will be played Wednesday and Thursday at Cypress Woods HS. KOGT will have live updates on our Facebook page.
Rockdale (25-8-1) comes out of an 8-team 19-4A district where they finished second behind Troy, who lost to Franklin last week.
Located in between Austin and College Station, they are coach by Austin Caffey who is in his second year as a head coach. He coached the Tigers to a 13-14 record in his first season.
The Tigers defeated Groesbeck in two high scoring games. They defeated Malakoff in two and then West in three games after losing game one in 10 innings. In the third game of the series they were down 6-1 before coming back and walking it off in the eighth 8-7.
In the West series leadoff hitter Daniel Castillo was 5-12. Number two batter Layton Mogford was 4-11, Mario Casarez was 2-8 and clean up hitter Mason Willard was 4-13. Also CF Blaydn Barcak had a good series, going 5-12 with 4RBI’s.
Willard also had their best outing on the mound, pitching a complete game 3 hit shutout in Gm. 2 with 7K’s. Other pitchers used in the West series included Casarez, Mogford, Mason Lillard, and Austin Caldwell.
The Bobcats (27-8) have won three series, outscoring their opponents 53-16 in seven games. That includes three shutouts thanks to the pitching of Brycen Tait, sophomore Kaleb Menard and freshman Carson Gonzales.
Kane Smith leads off for the Bobcats and he leads them in the playoffs with a .478 average. District MVP Caleb Fregia and Camden Fountain are hitting .389 and Salutatorian Logan Cheek is hitting .364.
The Tigers will be graduating Friday while the OHS Class of 2024 will walk the stage on Saturday which is why the series is taking place earlier in the week.
The winner of this series will face either Franklin or Huntington. They will play a best of three series on Thursday/Friday.
