Chewing and swallowing something as a police officer walked up did not keep a man from jail. The officer reported finding shards of crystal meth on the driver’s seat floorboard.
Officer N.R. Medina reported he had stopped the car because it was traveling in the wrong direction of a one-way road. The stop was about 4:30 a.m. Monday, August 11 and the Nissan Altima pulled over for the officer in the parking lot of a hotel in the 2600 block of Interstate 10 frontage road.
Medina said that was he was walking up to the car, he saw the driver grab something in his fist and put it in his mouth. The man chewed and then picked up a drink cup in the console. He swallowed with the drink.
The man gave police permission to search. In addition to the shards, Medina found a glass pipe with burn marks in a paper sack in the console.
46-year-old Andrew Lee Degregory of Orange was arrested for the state jail felony of possession of a controlled substance. A 25-year-old woman passenger in the car was not arrested.
An attempt was made Sunday night, August 10, to steal the ATM from First State Bank at the corner of Interstate 10 and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Officers went to the bank at 7:30 a.m. Monday to investigate the damaged property.
Detective Captain Robert Enmon said thieves had tried to pull the ATM loose to take it. The concrete foundation of the machine was cracked and the machine had minor damage.
A resident in the 2300 block of Pacific Street in the Sunset Park neighborhood reported gunshot damage from the night before. Captain Enmon said the male resident went to work and noticed the back window of his pickup had been shot. The man called his wife and asked if she could find any damage.
Enmon said the woman and children found multiple holes in the front of the house. One child said they thought they had heard gunshots during the night.
