Orange police report the pickup truck driven by 75-year-old Dickie Colburn pulled out from the driveway of First Baptist Church into on-coming traffic on Martin Luther King Drive. Colburn died of injuries sustained when an SUV collided into the side of his truck.
The crash was about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Colburn was a native of Orange and a local fishing guide who had been featured in KOGT’s “Let’s Go Fishing” show for more than 30 years. He also wrote a weekly column in The Record.
The driver of the SUV was 27-year-old Jonathan Ryan Lollar of Deweyville. He was taken by Acadian Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont with injuries reported as not life-threatening.
Officer Casey reported Colburn was driving a 2009 Chevrolet C1500 pickup truck. He was leaving the church parking lot and turning left onto MLK.
Lollar was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer westbound on MLK. Officer Casey said Colburn failed to yield the right of way and pulled into the pathway of the Explorer. The Explorer hit the left passenger side of the truck in what is called a “T-bone” crash.
Colburn was flown by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he succumbed to his injuries about two hours later.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 1 at 11 a.m. with interment following the service at First Presbyterian in Orange, Texas with a reception following in our Family Life Center, the Gillespie Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Orange, TX.
