Orange will be installing a new water storage tower and building a water plant on the south side of Interstate 10 east of Highway 62.
The tank will be decorated with a new logo the council chose. Plus the tank will have LED lights “so at night it will really pop,” said Public Works Director Jim Wolf.
The Orange City Council Tuesday night agreed to accept a donation of about a half acre of land from Houseman Development for the tower, well and plant. The land is adjacent to the Mueller business off the interstate feeder road.
In addition, the city will buy right-of-way land from Houseman Development to run city lines across the area known as Eagle Point. Wolf said the right-of-way will be 20-feet wide with 10,890 linear feet. The right-of-way is a total of about five acres. Wolf said the city usually spends $10,000 an acre for right-of-way. At that price, the total will be $50,000.
City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the city’s new social media coordinator Hillary Haynes designed graphics for the tower. The design will also be used on the city’s tower on 16th Street near Interstate 10.
During previous council meetings, some councilors complained about the recent painting and decoration of the water tower off Simmons Drive. District 3 Councilor Essie Bellfield has advocated advertising the city on the towers.
Bellfield along with District 1 Councilor Pat Pullen, District 2 Councilor Dr. Wayne Guidry, At-Large Councilor Larry Spears and Mayor Jimmy Sims agreed on one of the graphics.
