Orange police have arrested 20-year-old Deontae Armstrong of Orange for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in connection with the Monday night home robbery that ended with a Labrador retriever shot to death.
The affidavit of probable cause for the arrest warrant also lists two other suspects, but no one else has been arrested. The affidavit does not name the person who shot the dog.
The robbery was about 9:20 p.m. Monday at a house in the 1400 block of Cherry Avenue. Four males, ages from 16 to 20, were inside the house.
The affidavit by Sergeant Jason Laughlin, says one of the victims said he answered a knock at the door and picked up a kitchen knife when he answered. Two men came inside and asked why he had the knife. One of the men pulled out a gun and hit the man with the knife in the head with the pistol. Police reported the man was bleeding from a gash above his eye.
The man with the gun also hit another one of the males inside, scratching his face. The robbers ended up stealing a cell phone and a small amount of marijuana. On the way out, the gunman shot and killed the dog. The affidavit says when police arrived one of the victims was holding the dog.
Police recovered a bullet and a casing from a .40 caliber S&W, Federal brand, according to the affidavit.
Armstrong was arrested and charged for felony deadly conduct in June 2017 in connection with shots fired at an unmarked Orange County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.
The vehicle had a bullet hole in the bumper and a tire shot out. The two undercover deputies patroling in the Roselawn subdivision fired back at the shooters.
