The Brazoria County Alternative Academy with the Houston Chinese Chamber of Commerce as a partner will be renovating the former West Orange intermediate and Lorena Oates elementary schools.
The school on Western Avenue will be converted for 25 rooms for homeless veterans and 25 student apartments to support Lamar State College-Orange.
Twenty duplexes are planned for independent senior living at the Oates school on Newton Avenue.
In addition, a variety of programs will be based at both schools. The programs include an Orange County Small Business Incubator Program, early childhood development center, after-school tutorial program, nutrition program and technology center.
The Brazoria County Alternative Academy bought both schools last year at an auction of the West Orange-Cove school district. The schools had not been used for students in several years.
Brazoria County Alternative Academy lists itself as an educational services company that controls and manages charter schools, early childhood development centers, testing centers, employment and training programs, Sylvan Learning Center franchises, nutrition programs and multi-purpose centers.
Ricky Scarborough of Scarborough Industries of Orange will be the construction manager.
