The Lady Bobcats in Orangefield have been contenders for the district championship the last few years, winning it two years ago. Coach Amy McLaughlin believes this year’s club has a corps of returning players that will make Orangefield a playoff team again this season.
McLaughlin points to seniors Haley Fontenot in centerfielder, Maleah Saucedo starting at shortstop, and Morghan Kelley holding down third base as leaders. She also will look to a trio of sophomores returning to the varsity with Kaylee Ancelot seeing a lot of time in the circle pitching to Autumn Frost behind the plate, and Kristin Broussard playing in the outfield.
Coach McLaughlin has some new girls on the varsity to fill some holes for the Lady Bobcats. Freshman Karlye Bramblett has made the starting lineup at second base. Sophomore Kinley McFarlin is moving up from the junior varsity to start at first base, and the coach calls her a wall defensively nothing gets by her. Two move-ins Julie Ciancaglione and Jessica Metts will add depth for the Lady Bobcats.
Orangefield will play small ball and long ball for McLaughlin. The Lady Bobcats will have exhibit speed on the bases. They also have a power broker McLaughlin believes in Kaylee Ancelot who hit eight homeruns last season and is very likely to continue that power display this season.
In the circle Coach McLaughlin has a returning starter and a new comer to provide some pitching depth. Ancelot saw a lot of time in the circle last year for McLaughlin. Ciancaglione comes to Orangefield and will add some relief for Kaylee in the circle.
McLaughlin thinks the Lady Bobcats will contend for the top spot in the district this year. Coach McLaughlin is thrilled by the girls’ attitude and passion for the game. The number one goal is to win district according to McLaughlin, but she concludes in the grand scheme of things it is to compete, make a run in the playoffs, and always go deeper than you did the year before.
