The Orangefield Bobcats took a stumble last week losing to the Kirbyville Wildcats. Orangefield will try to return to the win column this week at home against the Woodville Eagles.
Coach Josh Smalley indicates the Eagles under new head coach Ty Robinson run a unique offense. Their offensive lineman lineup shoe-to-shoe, with two tight ends, two wing backs, and the fullback directly behind the quarterback who is tucked under the center. Smalley jokes Woodville’s formation is so tight it could run its offense in a closet. From this formation the Eagles run speed sweeps, the counter, the toss, and the trap with backs that have speed to break a long run on any play. The coach concedes Woodville is really playing well right now.
On defense Woodville plays out of a four-man-front. Smalley is looking to have the Bobcats block the Eagles’ Chris Castle who is a gate crasher at defensive end. He wreaks havoc on almost every play, and Smalley compares Castle to an old school Lawrence Taylor or currently to J. J. Watt because he is always in the backfield creating problems. The Eagles are not very big defensively, but they do have a lot of team speed and run to the football well. “They’re riding high right now, but I like our kids focus and I like our effort, I think we’ll come out Friday ready to play,” Smalley predicts.
Woodville comes into the game undefeated. Coach Smalley provides the keys for Orangefield to pick up its second win and hand the Eagles their first loss. Avoiding turnovers and penalties are always important on offense. The Bobcats need to tackle well while taking the right angles on defense. Smalley does credit Orangefield having an advantage on specialty teams especially in the kicking game with the strong leg of kicker Jacob Rainey. Big plays hurt the Bobcats last week, and they must not give up the big play against Woodville.
Friday night the Orangefield Bobcats play the Woodville Eagles at F. L. McClain Stadium in Orangefield. The kickoff is at 7:30.
