After a week off due to some blistering cold temperatures the Orangefield Bobcat Varsity Tennis team was back in action at the Kirbyville Tournament.
The Cats had a great day in what turned out to be the largest tournament of the year. Several players made their “big league” tennis debuts highlighted by sophomore, Cooper Dorman, putting together a nice run into the semis in his first time playing varsity singles.
The newly formed boys doubles team of Brycen Amy and Leland Conley struggled through a tough first match, but rallied on the day to roll through the competition on their way to a consolation victory.
Additionally, Orangefield saw success in the mixed doubles division as returning district champs, Ava Walker and Adam Tsan reunited for the first time since last year’s regional tournament.
The pair didn’t miss a beat and went on to defeat Sabine Pass and a very good Bridge City team without dropping a set to advance to finals where they would be matched against last year’s district runner-up, Kirbyville.
Walker & Tsan got off to an electric start taking the first set 6-2, but Foster & Fultz fought back to dominate the second set winning with Orangefield only taking one game off of the duo. In the third set tiebreaker, Adam’s serves proved too tough to handle as he and Ava jumped out to a quick lead and didn’t look back winning 10-5 to take the crown in their first tournament appearance this year.
The team returns to the Beaumont Tennis Center next week to face the some stout competition in the Nederland Tournament.
