The Orangefield Bobcats remain undefeated and unscored upon after two games on the young football season. The Bobcats shutout the Livingston Lions 41-0 at Lion Stadium in Livingston on Friday night.
The Bobcats took advantage of turnovers and returns to take a substantial lead after the first quarter. Orangefield went three-and-out on its first series and then had a punt blocked giving Livingston the ball at the Bobcat 30. On the Lions second play Clayson Choate intercepted a halfback option pass and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown. The kick failed, but Orangefield led 6-0 just over two minutes into the game.
Livingston punted on its next possession. Choate returned the kick 19 yards to the Lions’ 32. On second down a snap over the head of quarterback Mason Gonzales put the ball back to the 48. On third-and-26, Heston Puckett took a handoff and found lots of running room straight ahead to go the distance for the touchdown. The point-after was missed again to keep the score 12-0 in favor of the Bobcats with 4:24 to play in the opening quarter.
On the first play following the kickoff Livingston fumbled. Choate scooped up the loose ball and scampered 25 yards for his second defensive score. Derek Glaze was successful with his kick this time to make the score 19-0 with still over four minutes left in the first.
Rounding out a sensational individual first quarter Choate returned another Livingstone punt 52 yards to the Lions 27. Blake Bradley carried twice for 22 yards. Gonzales got the touchdown on the next play with an off tackle run from the 5-yard line. Glaze’s kick upped the lead to 26-0 with just over a minute to play in the initial stanza.
The only scoring in the second quarter was again by the Orangefield defense. After a punt by Kade Grozier was downed at the one, Livingston fumbled the long snap from shotgun formation and the back was tackled in the end zone.
Orangefield had several penalties on its last drive of the half. Two of the penalties called back touchdowns for the Bobcats. The teams went to the locker room with the Bobcats leading 28-0.
The second half was a bit more traditional for Orangefield as it used time consuming drives to help run off the clock and chew up yards on offense. The Bobcats dominated the Lions earning 19 first downs to four given up. Total yardage found Orangefield with 352 yards on the ground and 18 through the air for a total of 370. Livingston totaled 76 yards for the game.
Puckett was the leading ground gainer with 92 yards on nine carries. Gonzales had 81 yards on 15 rushes.
The score went to 35-0 when Orangefield drove 73 yards in seven plays on its second possession of the second half. Gonzales scored his second touchdown on a 17-yard run. Glaze added the point-after.
The final score came in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats needed six plays as Quy Tsan swept left end for 33 yards to bring the score to 41-0. The kick was blocked.
The Orangefield Bobcats are on the road again next week at Shepherd which handed Livingston an opening week loss.
