Spiders, gnats, expired foods and dirty slushie spiggots are among the demerits Orange County Health Inspector James Scales found at food businesses during the last part of July.
Scales went to 16 places during the time with only one getting a perfect score. The cafe at First Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Orange had no problems.
The lowest score was a 76 and was for the Donut Palace at 5603 16th Street in Orange. Problems included sausage and eggs at improper temperatures with no time kept on how long the products had been out. Scales commented on his report that “lots of clean-up required” at the store.
Scales made four pre-opening inspections and gave no scores for those. On one, the Donut Shop, 1125 Texas Avenue in Bridge City, the shop moved without the proper permits. He said neither the owner of the building nor the owner of the business called for an inspection. However, he let the shop operate.
Another pre-opening was for the Lighthouse Academy, 19400 Highway 62 in Orange, which is inside the Old Traditions Daycare building. Also, pre-opening inspections were made at Arctic Treat Sno Cones, 2000 Strickland Drive, and Brick Oven Pizza on Texas Avenue in Bridge City.
